There’s a mysterious, unsettling space between the canvas as surface and the canvas as window, which seems to me a place of openness and possibility, a place of pure experience. I look for points of slippage to access that awkward, active space where language is bypassed in favour of the imaginative act of looking.
Emma Lilly grew up in Tynemouth in the north-east of England and now lives and works in London. She studied at Cambridge university, Central St Martin’s School of Art and Turps Art School. She has exhibited in group shows in the UK and Europe; solo shows include Tangibilia at Fitzrovia Gallery, London W1 (February 2023), Crawl Space Jam at noformat gallery in Deptford (Dec 2021) and New Paintings at A-side/B-side gallery in Hackney (2018). Her work was selected by Ansel Krut for the ING Discerning Eye prize show in London in 2022.
